A Window With Iron in It
The Fairytale Scroll is our most ornamental door and the only one with metalwork on its face. An arched opening near the top of a planked knotty pine slab is filled with a hand scrolled iron grille, backed with glass, and the rest of the field is studded with forged clavos.
The scroll pattern is not stamped. It is bent iron, which means the curves have slight variations in them, and those variations are the reason the door reads as old rather than as a reproduction of old.
Everything else about the door is restrained on purpose. The planks are plain, the stain is honest, the arch is small. All of the ornament is concentrated in one place, which is how ornament worked before it got cheap.
Design Details
Hand Scrolled Iron Grille
Bent by hand, so no two curves are identical. It is the variation that separates this from a cast or stamped panel.
Small Arched Opening
The lite is deliberately modest. Keeping it small is what lets the ironwork carry weight instead of getting lost.
Forged Clavos
Hammered head studs set into the plank field, placed in a deliberate rhythm rather than scattered across the door.
Plain Knotty Pine Behind
The field is quiet. Straight planks, visible knots, a single honest stain. Everything decorative happens inside the arch.
Choosing Your Glass
The arched opening behind the iron scroll is glazed. Reamy is the natural companion here, since its wavy hand poured character matches the irregularity of the bent iron in front of it. Acid etched turns the opening into a glowing white field and throws the scrollwork into silhouette, which is the most dramatic option. Rain runs vertical ripples behind the curves. Aquatex pebbles the light softly. If you want a specific glass behind the grille, tell us on your order and we will set it up.
Iron, Glass and Wood in One Slab
Three materials in one door means three different rates of movement, and the openings that hold them have to be cut with that in mind. This is old joinery and there is no fast way to do it. Every one is built to order in Pipersville, Pennsylvania, from solid pine, and carries our lifetime warranty against warping and twisting.
