Farmhouse, in a Serious Color
A classic farmhouse barn door carries a small X brace at the top and another at the bottom, leaving the middle of the plank field open. It is the configuration you find on old carriage house doors, where the bracing needed to resist sag at the corners and nothing more.
Most people order this one in white or a natural stain. The version shown is a deep navy, and it makes the argument better than we can: the plank seams, the brace edges and the black hardware all come forward, and the door stops being rustic and starts being architectural.
As a bypass pair it closes a wide opening without a single dominant element on the face, which is why it works in a living room where an X brace door would take over.
Design Details
Braced Top and Bottom
Two small X assemblies at the corners of the field, leaving the middle of the door open and calm.
Open Plank Middle
The center of the slab is plain boards. It gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the door from reading busy at close range.
Excellent in Deep Color
A saturated paint turns the plank seams into pinstripes and the braces into geometry. This face carries color better than any other we build.
Made for Wide Pairs
Two panels close a large opening without either one demanding attention. Nothing on the face fights across the seam.
Carriage House Logic
The reason those old doors survived a century is that they were built from solid boards and braced where the load was. We build the same way, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with no hollow core and no MDF, and we back every door with a lifetime warranty against warping and twisting.
