Two Thirds Glass, One Third Timber
The Prairie style put its muntins at the perimeter of the lite instead of across the middle of it, framing the view rather than dividing it. This door takes that idea and gives it two thirds of the slab: a tall glazed field with a prairie border of narrow bars, sitting over a solid lower rail studded with clavos.
The proportion is the whole design. Enough glass to pull light from one room into the next, enough solid wood at the bottom to take the wear that the bottom of a door always takes, and a strong horizontal line where the two meet.
In the dark stain shown, with black hardware and iron clavos, the door leans Craftsman. It borrows from the era it comes from without being a reproduction of anything.
Design Details
Prairie Muntin Border
Narrow bars set in from the edge of the lite, framing the glass rather than chopping it into panes. The view through stays open.
Two Thirds Glazed
The glass runs from the head rail down to roughly the height of a chair back, which is where light does the most good and where a door takes the least abuse.
Clavos on the Lower Rail
Forged head studs punctuate the solid field beneath the glass. They are the only ornament on the door and they are placed, not scattered.
A Strong Horizontal Break
The rail dividing glass from timber sits low and heavy, which grounds a door that is mostly light.
Choosing Your Glass
This door is glazed, and the glass you choose changes it completely. Acid etched gives you a soft frosted white with the most privacy, and it holds the prairie border crisply against it. Rain runs vertical ripples that echo the muntin bars. Reamy has a wavy, hand poured irregularity that suits the Craftsman lineage of this door better than anything else we offer. Aquatex is a fine pebbled texture that scatters light while keeping the room behind it a suggestion. Choose yours in the configurator above.
Glass Puts Load Where Wood Does Not
A door that is two thirds glass carries most of its weight in the upper half. That is the opposite of how a slab is usually loaded, and it is why the frame around the lite has to be solid, seasoned wood joined properly at the corners. We build every one in Pipersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and back the frame with our lifetime warranty.
