Every Board a Different Color

The Horizontal Palette is the only door we make where the finish is the design. Boards run horizontally across the face in random lengths and staggered seams, and each one carries its own color: rust, ochre, charcoal, cream, deep plum, weathered gray. Nothing repeats and nothing matches, which is the discipline of it.

Getting this right is harder than it looks. Too much contrast and the door turns into a beach sign. Too little and the whole thing goes muddy. The palette is arranged board by board so that no two strong colors sit adjacent and the eye keeps moving across the face instead of stopping on a single loud plank.

It is a piece of art with a track on it. In a playroom, a studio or a kid’s room, it does more for the space than anything you could hang on the wall next to it.

Design Details

Board by Board Color

Each plank is finished individually and placed by eye. No two doors come out of the shop with the same arrangement.

Staggered Random Courses

Seams are offset so no vertical line ever forms across the face, and the pattern never resolves into a grid.

Balanced, Not Random

Strong colors are separated deliberately. The randomness is composed, which is why the door reads as intentional rather than as scrap.

Doubles as Artwork

Hung as a pair across a wide opening it becomes the focal wall of the room, and it still slides out of the way when you need the doorway.

Color Sits on Top of Something

Under all that finish is a solid wood door, built to order in Pipersville, Pennsylvania. Multi color work only holds up if the boards underneath stay put, because every seam that opens shows as a bright line between two colors. Ours are dried and laid up to stay closed, and the door is covered by our lifetime warranty.

How to Measure Your Opening

A few quick measurements and we build your door to fit perfectly.

Measure the Width

Measure across the opening with the trim included. If there is no trim, measure just the width of the opening itself.

Measure the Height

Measure the total height of the opening including the trim. If there is no trim, measure just the height of the opening.

Leave Room for Hardware

Allow at least 6″ of clearance above the opening (or above the trim) for the track hardware. Bypass doors need a minimum of 9″.

We Handle the Coverage

No trim? We add 4″ to the width (2″ each side) and 1″ to the height for proper coverage. With trim, we build the door to extend slightly past it.
