Horizontal Bars, Deliberately Uneven
This one is not trying to be a wall. Thick horizontal bars cantilever off a single vertical stile, each one running a different length across the opening, with a solid disc set low as a counterweight to all that motion. The gaps between the bars are as much a part of the design as the bars themselves.
It works as a partial screen. Light and air move straight through it, and the room behind stays present rather than shut away. That makes it a divider more than a door, which is exactly how our customers keep using it: between a living room and a stair, at the end of an open hall, in front of a reading corner.
The staggered bar lengths were arrived at by eye, not by formula. Ours are proportioned so the composition stays balanced whether the door is parked open against the wall or drawn closed across the opening.
Design Details
Cantilevered Bars
Each bar is joined to a single vertical stile and reaches out unsupported. The joint at that stile is the whole structure of the door, and it is cut and pinned accordingly.
Deliberate Negative Space
The gaps let light, air and sound through. This is a divider that suggests separation rather than enforcing it.
The Disc
A solid round element sits low on the face, breaking the horizontal rhythm and giving the eye somewhere to rest. Remove it and the door reads unfinished.
Balanced Open or Closed
Bar lengths are proportioned so the composition holds together in both positions, not just when the door is shut.
An Open Door Still Has to Stay Straight
A door with this much removed from it has nowhere to hide a weak joint. Everything comes down to how the bars meet the stile and how the wood was chosen and dried before it got there. Every one of these is built to order in Pipersville, Pennsylvania, from solid stock, and carries our lifetime warranty. There is no core to hollow out here, which is the point.
