A Geometry Problem, Worked Out in Wood
The Aztec is our most graphic door and the hardest one to build. Its face is a field of mitered strips laid into concentric angular frames, stepping inward toward a center that never quite closes. Every joint is a miter, every miter has to land, and a single strip out of true throws the whole composition off.
Painted in a deep matte, the pattern stops being about wood and becomes about light. The routed channels read as black lines. The raised fields read as planes. Walk past it and the whole face shifts, because the shadows are doing the work.
It is a strong door. In a hallway or an entry it becomes the reason the hallway exists. Hung as a pair, as shown, the pattern mirrors across the seam and doubles in scale.
Design Details
Mitered Applique
Dozens of individually cut strips, each mitered at the corner and laid onto the panel by hand. There is no shortcut version of this face.
Concentric Angular Frames
Bands step inward in a repeating diamond and chevron rhythm, tightening as they go, so the eye keeps traveling toward the middle of the door.
Built for Paint
The pattern is at its strongest in a single flat color, where the ornament comes entirely from the channels and the shadows they cast.
Doubles as a Pair
Hung as two panels the design mirrors across the center seam. What was a busy face on one door becomes a symmetrical composition on two.
One Door, Many Hours
This door is assembled and finished by hand in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The applied pattern means the panel underneath is under constant tension from dozens of glue lines, so it has to be solid wood and it has to be properly seasoned before a single strip goes on. That is why we build it to order rather than pull it off a rack, and why it carries our lifetime warranty.
