A Screen You Can Slide
Vertical slats, evenly spaced, running the full height of the frame. That is the entire design, and it is enough. The Japanese Slat borrows from shoji and from the timber screens in a traditional engawa, where a door was expected to filter a room rather than seal it.
Spacing is everything on a door like this. Too tight and it turns into a picket fence. Too open and it stops reading as a plane. Ours are set so that standing square to the door you see mostly wood, and walking past it you see mostly through, which is the effect the originals were after.
In a bathroom, as shown, it lets steam and light pass while still marking the threshold. It is one of the few doors we make that improves the room it opens into as much as the room it closes off.
Design Details
Full Height Slats
Each slat runs unbroken from the top rail to the bottom rail. No mid rail, no interruption, so the vertical line stays pure.
Calibrated Spacing
The gaps are set to read as solid head on and open in passing. That single dimension is what separates this door from a fence panel.
Air and Light Move Through
Useful anywhere a closed door would make a small room feel smaller, or a dark room darker.
Warm Stain, Straight Grain
Slats are selected for straight, quiet grain so the eye follows the line of the door rather than stopping on a knot.
Thirty Small Joints, All Load Bearing
A slatted door is a series of joints pretending to be a panel. Every slat carries part of the frame, so every one has to be seated properly and the frame has to be square before it ever leaves the bench. Ours are built one at a time in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from solid wood with no hollow core to sag, and they carry our lifetime warranty.
