Half Glass, Half Wood, All Prairie
Where our 2/3 Prairie gives most of the slab to glass, this one splits it down the middle. The upper half carries a single lite with a prairie grid set into the corner, and the lower half is solid wood. It is a more conservative proportion and a more practical one for a kitchen or a mudroom, where the bottom of a door meets boots and mops.
Set in the weathered gray stain shown, with a small four pane grid in the upper corner of the lite, the door reads as an old service door from a farmhouse pantry. That is the reference, and it is a good one.
The line where glass meets wood lands at counter height in most openings, which is why this door disappears so easily into a working kitchen.
Design Details
Half Lite Proportion
Glass above, solid wood below, split near the middle of the slab. The line lands around counter height in a standard opening.
Corner Prairie Grid
A small pane grid sits in one corner of the lite rather than across the whole of it. The rest of the glass is left open.
Solid Lower Field
The half of the door that takes the wear is wood, not glass. It is the reason this configuration outlived the full lite version in old houses.
Weathered Gray Stain
A driftwood tone that lets the grain read through and pairs cleanly with painted cabinetry.
Choosing Your Glass
This door is glazed and the choice matters more here than on a full lite door, because there is less glass to work with. Acid etched gives a solid frosted panel with maximum privacy. Rain pulls vertical texture down through the lite and is the most forgiving of a kitchen behind it. Reamy distorts softly, in the manner of old hand poured window glass, and suits the farmhouse lineage of this door. Aquatex reads as fine pebbling and keeps the lite bright. Pick yours in the configurator above.
Where the Wood Meets the Glass
The rail that divides glass from timber is the most heavily loaded joint on this door. Everything above it hangs from the frame, everything below it takes the knocks. We cut and join that rail from solid wood in Pipersville, Pennsylvania, and we warranty it for as long as the door is yours.
