The X, Reduced
Strip a barn door of its planks, its distress, its clavos and its warm stain, and what remains is a rectangle with an X in it. The Modern X is that door. A flat matte black face, a crisp perimeter frame, and one X spanning corner to corner with nothing else on the slab.
In matte black the brace does not read as wood. It reads as a line. Depending on where you stand, the X is either a dark graphic on a dark field or a set of shadow edges catching the room light, and it changes as you move past it.
It is the least rustic door we make that still has a brace on it, which turns out to be exactly what a lot of modern houses want.
Design Details
Single Full Span X
One X, corner to corner, at full scale. Nothing smaller, nothing doubled, no secondary framing inside it.
Flat Matte Black
A dead flat finish kills reflection and turns the face into a plane. The only highlight in the door is the edge of the brace.
No Plank Lines
The field between the braces is smooth. Without seams, the geometry has nothing to compete with.
Square Perimeter Frame
A clean stile and rail border squares the composition and gives the X somewhere definite to land.
Black Shows Everything
A dark flat finish is the most punishing surface in a workshop. Every ripple, every proud joint and every bit of movement in the panel shows up under a raking light. We build these solid and flat in Pipersville, Pennsylvania, and we finish them to be looked at closely. If the panel ever moves on you, the lifetime warranty covers it.
