Black Muntins on a Stained Frame
Most French doors match the grid to the frame. This one does not. The muntins are finished in flat black while the stiles and rails keep their wood stain, so the grid reads as steel sitting in a timber frame. It is the detail that makes the Classic French look like a salvaged factory window and not like a cabinet door.
Textured glass behind the black grid does the rest. The panes glow rather than reveal, the muntins hold their line across them, and the door has depth from across the room that a clear pane could never give it.
Hung as a pair across an office opening, as shown, the two grids line up and the effect is of a glazed partition rather than a set of doors.
Design Details
Black Grid, Stained Frame
The muntins and the frame are finished differently on purpose. The grid comes forward as a graphic element and the wood stays wood.
Full Height Panes
The lites run the full height of the door with no solid rail interrupting them at the bottom. Light reaches the floor.
Textured Glass Behind
With obscured glass the panes read as luminous panels and the black grid becomes the drawing. The contrast is the whole design.
Reads as a Steel Window
All of the industrial look of a black steel window, in solid wood, at a fraction of the weight on the track.
Choosing Your Glass
This door is glazed and it is built to show off obscured glass. Acid etched gives an even frosted white behind the black grid, which is the crispest and most graphic option. Rain runs vertical ripples through each pane and is the closest match to an old factory sash. Reamy waves and pools like antique glass and softens the hard geometry of the grid. Aquatex pebbles the light and reads as the most contemporary of the four. Choose yours in the configurator above.
Two Finishes, One Door
Finishing a grid in one color and the frame in another means masking every intersection by hand, twice, with no room for a run or a bleed. It is done at the bench in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on a solid wood door built for your opening, and it is covered by our lifetime warranty like everything else we make.
